What It Is

East and West on the same table

Thai Combination is what happens when traditional Thai bodywork meets the oil massage most Americans grew up with. In a single session your therapist presses along the body's sen lines with thumbs and palms, guides your hips, legs and shoulders through assisted stretches, then flows into long strokes of warm oil and slower, deeper work on whatever is holding on. It is active where it needs to be and restful everywhere else.

It is the treatment we recommend when someone cannot decide between relaxing and being properly worked on, because it does both. First-time guests choose it to find out what Thai technique feels like without giving up the comfort of an oil massage. Regulars choose it because it is the one that leaves them loosest.

Where the Thai half comes from

Nuad Thai was inscribed by UNESCO in 2019 on its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, described as part of "the art, science and culture of traditional Thai healthcare". The lines of pressure we follow were carved into stone at Wat Pho in Bangkok in the 1830s, and tradition honours Jivaka Komarabhacca, physician to the Buddha, as the father of Thai medicine. The combination with Swedish and deep-tissue technique is a modern, table-based idea with no single recipe. Every studio does it differently. This page describes ours.

What to Expect

Your session, start to finish

Every session is shaped in the room around what your body is carrying that day.

  1. Arrive

Ten minutes early on a first visit for a short health form. Tell us about injuries, surgery, pregnancy and any allergy to oils or fragrance.

  2. A short conversation

Where the tension lives, how firm you like it, anything you would rather we left alone. Your therapist then steps out while you get comfortable under the sheet.

  3. The treatment

Most sessions open with assisted stretching and rhythmic compression to loosen you, continue with warm oil work across the whole body, and return to slower, deeper pressure where it is needed. Positions change through the session; only the area being worked is uncovered.

  4. Afterwards

Take your time getting up. Have some water, move gently, and expect to feel pleasantly loose. Mild tenderness the next day is normal after firmer work.

Why Guests Book It

Looser, calmer, and both at once

Guests come for the stretch and stay for the quiet. Here is what we can honestly say it does.

  • Mobility and relaxation in one visitAssisted stretching opens the hips, hamstrings and shoulders; the oil work settles everything afterwards.
  • Firm where it countsDeep, specific pressure on the places that are actually tight, not everywhere by default.
  • Thai technique on a tableForearms, elbows and steady compression along the sen lines, without a floor mat or undressing in a hurry.
  • A quieter nervous systemThe single most reliable finding in massage research is a calmer body in the hour afterwards.

What the research says, and what it doesn't

No study has tested "Thai combination" as American studios sell it. The evidence comes from trials of traditional Thai massage and of massage in general, and it is modest and mostly short-term.

  • A meta-analysis of 37 randomised studies (Moyer et al. 2004) found a single massage reliably lowers state anxiety, blood pressure and heart rate, and that a course of sessions reduced anxiety and depression by amounts the authors compared to psychotherapy. It did not find a reliable drop in cortisol, so you will not read that claim here.
  • In a trial of 120 adults with chronic low back pain (Juntakarn et al. 2017), traditional Thai massage twice a week for four weeks cut pain from 5.3 to 0.5 on a ten-point scale, matching joint mobilisation by a physiotherapist. There was no untreated group, so the authors call it "a short-term effect".
  • A 2012 review comparing Thai and Swedish massage for chronic low back pain found them about equally effective. We offer the combination because guests like how it feels, not because one tradition beats the other.
  • The Cochrane review of massage for low back pain (25 trials, 3,096 people) has "very little confidence" in long-term benefit. No serious harms were reported; temporary soreness was the most common side effect.

We do not diagnose or treat medical conditions. Persistent, radiating or unexplained pain belongs with a doctor first; we are glad to work alongside your doctor's or physical therapist's plan.

Is It Right for You?

Who it suits

A good fit if you…

  • You are new to Thai massage and want the real technique with the comfort of oil
  • You sit at a desk or behind a wheel and your neck, shoulders and hips have noticed
  • You have just driven in from Texas, Alabama or Georgia, or landed after a long flight
  • You golf, paddle, run or play pickleball and want to move more freely
  • You like firm pressure but dislike lying still for an hour
  • You are booking for a partner, a parent or a daughter who has never had one

Check with your doctor first if…

  • You are pregnant (our Pre & Post Natal Treatment is designed for you instead)
  • You have had surgery, a fracture or a significant injury in recent months
  • You take blood thinners, bruise easily, or have a bleeding disorder
  • You have, or may have, a blood clot; a swollen, warm or painful calf needs a doctor today
  • You have osteoporosis, a joint replacement, or a disc problem with numbness or weakness
  • You have a heart condition, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or are in cancer treatment
  • You have a fever, a contagious illness, a skin infection, open wounds, or sunburn where we would work

Tell us about anything on this list when you book. We can often adapt pressure, position or focus, and we will say so honestly if a different treatment, or a doctor first, is the better call.

Practical Notes

Before and after your session

Before you come

  • Eat lightly rather than heavily in the hour or two before
  • Rinse off sand and sunscreen, and tell us about any sunburn
  • Arrive ten minutes early on a first visit for the health form
  • Mention medications, surgeries, joint replacements and allergies to oils

Afterwards

  • Drink some water and take it slowly for the rest of the day
  • A warm shower or bath that evening helps the work settle
  • Skip hard training and alcohol tonight
  • Mild tenderness for a day or two is normal; call us if anything feels sharp or lingers

How often? Monthly keeps most bodies honest. Every two weeks through a tense season, or weekly for a month when one area will not let go. Americans average fewer than three massages a year; a regular rhythm is a real upgrade.

Questions Guests Ask

Good to know

What is a Thai Combination massage?

A table-based massage that blends Thai assisted stretching and acupressure with Swedish oil strokes and deep-tissue pressure. At Thai Touch that means traditional Thai stretching, Swedish massage, deep tissue techniques and acupressure in one session.

How is it different from traditional Thai massage?

Traditional Thai massage is done on a mat, fully clothed, without oil, with more positioning and movement. Thai Combination is on the table with warm oil, under a drape, with more continuous flowing work between the stretches. Our Thai Yoga Stretching is the clothed, oil-free version.

How is it different from Swedish or deep tissue?

Swedish is slow, gliding and relaxation-led. Deep tissue is slow, concentrated pressure into chronic tension. Thai Combination adds assisted stretching and pressure along the sen lines to oil work, so you get movement as well as massage.

Do I undress? Is oil used?

You undress to your comfort level and stay covered by a sheet; only the area being worked is uncovered. Warm oil is used. Tell us about nut or fragrance allergies and we will choose accordingly.

Does it hurt?

Firm, not painful. Stretches can feel strong at the end of your range and deep work can ache pleasantly. You set the pressure, and a single word changes it.

Sixty, ninety or a hundred and twenty minutes?

Sixty is a focused pass or priority areas done well. Ninety is the whole body with proper stretching and time on tight spots, and the best value per minute. A hundred and twenty is the unhurried version with extended deep work.

Will I be sore afterwards?

Possibly a little for a day or two after deeper work, like the day after a good workout. Water, warmth and gentle movement help.

How often should I come?

There is no official rule. Monthly for maintenance, every two weeks in a busy stretch, weekly for a few weeks when something specific needs attention.

Is it good for back pain or sciatica?

Studies of Thai massage for chronic low back pain show short-term improvement, and the broader research rates the evidence as low quality. We do not diagnose or treat conditions; see a doctor for persistent or radiating pain, then let us help with the muscle tension around it.

Can I have it while pregnant?

Not this one. The stretching and compression are not suited to pregnancy. Our Pre & Post Natal Treatment is designed for exactly that.

Can we book it as a couple?

Yes. Two tables, two therapists, side by side. See couples bookings.

Where does Thai massage come from?

From Thailand's traditional healing system, honoured by UNESCO in 2019, carved in stone at Wat Pho in the 1830s, and traditionally traced to Jivaka Komarabhacca, physician to the Buddha.

“A friend and I went and it was an amazing experience! Carrie was simply amazing! The Thai Combination was so good we encouraged our daughters to make an appointment too…”
